Scope

This file applies to the current public release. It does not change private locked experiment records, third-party rights, or permissions validly granted under an earlier licence. Each grant below extends only to rights the author controls.

Software

Author-controlled source code is offered under the PolyForm Noncommercial License 1.0.0. The complete, unmodified licence is in LICENSE-CODE.md: https://polyformproject.org/licenses/noncommercial/1.0.0

This covers author-controlled code under evals/, scripts/, tests/, verify_release.py and other author-controlled Python source in this release. Permitted purposes and conditions are defined by that licence. This release is source-available with noncommercial restrictions; it is not represented as an OSI-approved open-source release.

Documentation and research data

Author-controlled documentation, annotations, rubric, scoring guide, principles outline, fictional case materials and reference answers are offered under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International Public License (CC BY-NC 4.0): https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/

The controlling legal code is: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/legalcode.en

When that licence requires attribution, credit the Discovery Reasoning Study, retain the licence reference and indicate changes. NonCommercial is defined by the licence; it is not determined solely by an organization's nonprofit or for-profit status.

Additional permission for assessment and research verification

In addition to the licences above, any recipient may view, copy and internally circulate author-controlled materials, execute the author-controlled code, and reproduce the study's experiments or analyses solely for either of these purposes:

  1. Assessing the author's fellowship, employment, research-funding or collaboration application or proposal.
  2. Independently verifying or reproducing the study's reported methods and findings.

This permission applies to reviewers and researchers at commercial as well as noncommercial organizations, including when their assessment or verification work is paid. It includes configuring a local environment, making and recording changes reasonably necessary for reproduction, running the evaluation with appropriately obtained model access, and reporting verification findings with attribution to the Discovery Reasoning Study and disclosure of material changes. Running existing models to reproduce an evaluation is permitted; model-provider access, usage charges and terms remain the recipient's responsibility.

This additional permission does not itself authorize incorporation into commercial products, commercial deployment, providing paid services based on these materials, or training/fine-tuning models for commercial use. Such uses require separate permission unless already permitted by another applicable licence or by law. It conveys no third-party rights, implies no endorsement, and does not restrict rights already granted by the licences above or applicable law.

The author remains free to present, discuss, submit and separately license work for which they control the necessary rights. The public licences do not restrict the author from applying to a fellowship or agreeing separate collaboration terms. Application terms and any later agreement are separate from this public licence.

Exclusions

Third-party publications, educational excerpts, dependencies and other third-party material retain their own terms; no new rights in them are granted here. In particular, the Sacramento County Public Law Library sample is excluded. Public-domain statutes and opinions are not made proprietary by this notice. Model outputs are retained as experimental records; any grant is limited to rights the author actually holds and does not override provider terms or third-party rights.

Other uses and status

Uses outside the applicable licences and the additional assessment and verification permission require separate permission from the relevant rights holder. No MIT or CC BY 4.0 grant is made by this release. Research status, legal disclaimers and warranty limitations do not establish professional validation or regulatory compliance. See DISCLAIMER.md and the controlling licence terms.
